In the old days, if you played a sports game and checked out the crowd, it was a guy in a red shirt and then a guy in a blue shirt and then a guy in a green shirt — over and over again. One of the coolest things about EA’s upcoming NBA Live 09 is the crowd. Everyone looks different and no one is doing the same thing. Eerily, when I looked up from the game and focused on the crowd at E3, something dawned on me. It looks like a sports game circa 2003. There’s only about a half-dozen different types of people here that you keep seeing over and over again.

There’s the big guy with the wild hair. My E3 roommate Gus fits this mold. There are minor variations — some are just big; some are big and kinda fat. (Most of the types also have skin color variants. There are big black guys with wild hair, etc.)

The bald dude with stylish glasses and a goatee. My brother, Don, who showed up to do a piece on Harmonix is in this group. He left this morning, but every eight seconds I keep thinking I see him.

The guy with the fauxhawk. It’s a cool look — like you just woke up after spending exactly half the night sleeping on your left side and then half on your right side.

The cute and funky chick with the non-conformist hair and the low-cut jeans that show ass crack when she sits down.

The rugged and virile guy. That’d be me.
